DATA VAN DE DAG - Day before yesterday the 45th president of the United States of America was elected. We gathered some data for long term perspective.
Highest number of votes received by one candidate so far is 69.5 million for Barack Obama in 2008
The chart at top shows the voter turnout rate as percentage of the voting age population. Please be aware that on average the number of people eligible to vote is about 8% less.
The chart at the bottom shows the votes cast per presidential candidate.The highest number for one candidate was in 2008 for Barack Obama, 69.5 million votes.
But that chart is slightly skewed because the population also grew. So here's another one just showing the distribution of the votes for each year.
2000 and this year show you can win an election without having the majority.
